Bluffing on the Internet

There is a big difference between playing poker online and playing a live table game when it comes to bluffing. The main thing that I’ve noticed is that players will tend to bluff a lot more when they have the security of not being seen by the other players. In a live poker game, a lot of things can give away a bluff and thus makes people pick and choose the right time to bluff.
It is a lot easier to commit all of your chips with the click of a mouse button as opposed to moving your chip stack into the middle, which again can give things away about your hand. With that being said, you need to keep internet players honest a lot more often because you’ll find a lot of times that bullying other players works online in certain circumstances. The favorite kind of person that I like to bust is the guy on the dealer button who raises all in to try to chase the blinds away. I have called with marginal/modest hands and have taken out others who had completed bluffed. Be careful, though, as you only want to do this with loose players. If the person hasn’t bet a hand in a while and is doing this, there may be a good chance that he’s trying to entice a call.
For those of you who like to bluff, the inverse is true. People are much more apt to call your hands regardless of what you have. Internet poker veterans know that people like to bluff and will make you prove it. And even if you fool them, there are poker novices that will call you with anything. I once bluffed half of my stack on the first hand with K Q 10 and two low cards showing and I had A 9. The person called a pot bet with a pair of 7′s in his hand. Kudos to him for beating my bluff, but what on earth did he think he was doing?
Personally, I like to play few hands at first in sit and go tournaments and I try to profit large off of the big hands I receive. When the number of players has shrunk to 5, I like to switch up tactics and start trying to steal the pots as the blinds grow. People will think that you have a great hand and immediately fold the first couple of times. This also helps in one table tournaments that only pay 3 places. Inevitably at least three of the players will be hanging around to try to place 3rd. So bully their money away from them, but do so responsibly and without leaving yourself out to dry on a bluff.
